I would like to introduce myself. My name is Laura Donnelly and I will be your child’s grade 3/4 teacher this upcoming year. I am looking forward to an educational and successful year for all of us. The following writing should provide you with information that will provide you with my goals as an educator, as well as some of the activities and policies for this class.
My mission as an educator is to encourage our students to learn to the best of their ability. I believe that all students can learn the value of thinking for themselves, asking questions, and challenging themselves on a daily basis. I want the students to understand that there is nothing easy about being the best person and student they can be, but that nothing that is worthwhile ever comes easily. The rewards for hard work may not always be immediate, but completing work should always feel rewarding. I want to build positive relationships with all of you so that the students enter and leave my classroom feeling valued, respected, and cared for. Most of all, it is important to me to be a positive role model: people who actively engage in learning, treat others with dignity and respect, realize that questions are just as important as answers, and recognize the importance of reaching our potential.
During the year, students will be expected to engage in conversation on new and relevant issues, read in and out of class, participate in class lessons and literary discussions, speak and listen effectively, build their vocabulary skills, and complete various assignments to the best of their ability. We will read several novels, short stories, dramas, and poems, as well as nonfiction works. These readings will support the language arts curriculum, but will also make connections to social sciences, math, and science when possible. I believe that the more often students recognize the relationships between the various areas of their education, the better they will perform in all of their subjects. I encourage all my students who may be experiencing difficulty to please come and see me as soon as possible so that I may help you.
While the following information does not encompass all rules and expectations for this class, it does cover some specific and important pieces to be aware of as the year progresses.
LATE WORK: If work is assigned, it is worth doing regardless if it is submitted on time or not. If you are handing in something late please feel free to see me as I will always have an open door policy.
PUNCTUALITY: Students are expected to arrive on time. Students will be marked late if they are not in their seats by the time the announcements are finished.
PREPARATION: Students are expected to come to class with whatever materials they need, including paper, writing utensils, a grading pen or pencil, notebooks, novels.
BEHAVIOUR: Students are expected to treat others with courtesy, dignity, and respect. As this is a tribe’s school we will as a class be following the Tribes Agreements. Behaviour that proves otherwise or inhibits the learning of others is unacceptable.
HOMEWORK: I do not technically assign homework. If there is unfinished work during the day that resulted in staying on Task then your child may go home with homework. My homework advice if any is to read and have your child read to you every single night. It will help with fluency, comprehension and intonation.
Feel free to contact me at any time at [email protected]
I look forward to meeting you as parents in the future and to provide the best learning experience for your child.
Sincerely,
Laura Donnelly
